Comic time

Bonjour à tous !

Il  se trouve que, grâce à mes vacances, j'ai lu plus en un mois que dans tout le reste de l'année scolaire. Et entre autres, j'ai lu... des BD. Alors je me suis dit que je n'allais pas louper une occasion de vous faire découvrir de bons artistes.

Hello everyone !

Thanks to my holidays, I could read more in one month than in the whole year. Along with other books, I have read comics. Thus I thought I wouldn't miss an opportunity to make you discover great artists.



Pour commencer, je souhaite vous présenter le travail de Riad Sattouf, en particulier avec l'Arabe du futur. Cette BD autobiographique lui a valu le Fauve d'Or du Festival d'Angoulême. Avec un trait très simple et des personnages très expressifs, l'auteur nous raconte avec beaucoup d'humour son enfance partagée entre la France, la Lybie et la Syrie.

To begin, I want to introduce to you the work of Riad Sattouf, particularly with the Arab of the future. With this autobiographic comic, he won a prize at the Angoulême festival. With a simple line and very expressive characters, the author tells us with a lot of humor his childhood between France, Lybia and Syria.

Cette BD a, à mes yeux, à peu près toutes les qualités qu'on peut demander d'une BD : Le style de dessin me plait beaucoup, il est à la fois original, peu chargé et très expressif ; c'est très drôle et agréable à lire, on passe un bon moment ; ça traite de sujets très intéressants, principalement le choc culturel, ça informe et on se couche moins bête.

In my opinion, this comic have all the qualities that can be found in a comic : I like the drawing style very much, it's original, simple and very expressive ; it's very fun and nice to read, we spend a good time ; it's talking about interesting topics, chiefly the cultural differences, and at the end of the day we feel smarter.


Vous y retrouverez : une mère au foyer bretonne qui ne parle pas un mot d'arabe, un père docteur en histoire syrien adepte du panarabisme, la Lybie de Kadhafi et la Syrie d'Hafez Al-Assad, et bien sûr les inquiétudes, les amitiés, les histoires de famille, l'incompréhension, la joie et l'innocence de l'adorable petit Riad qui nous raconte tout ça de son point de vue d'enfant.

You'll find : a breton housewive who can't speak a word of arab, a syrian father who is doctor in History and who likes panarabism, the Lybia of Kadhafi and the Syria of Hafez Al-Assad, and of course the worries, the friendships, the family stories, the lack of understanding and the innocence of the lovely little Riad who's telling us all of that with his child point of view.


Je recommande cette BD à tout le monde, sans exception aucune. C'est vraiment adapté au grand public, aux jeunes comme aux plus vieux, à ceux qui s'intéressent à la situation au Moyen-Orient tout comme à ceux qui ont juste envie de passer du bon temps en lisant une bonne BD, à mon avis.

I recommend this comic to everybody without exception. It's truly adapted to everybody, to the youngs as the olds, to those who are interested in the situation in the Middle-East as those who just want to spend a nice time with a good comic, in my opinion.


J'ai aussi lu de Riad Sattouf son album Les carnets d'Esther, qui narre la vie d'une parisienne de 10 ans qui rêve d'avoir un Iphone, d'être une chanteuse belle (c'est à dire souple et blonde) donc riche et célèbre, et qui considère que son frère et tous les garçons sont cons (sauf son papa adoré). Une enfance si bien restituée qu'on croirait presque que l'auteur a lui même dix ans. Un livre très distrayant et rafraîchissant, dressant le portrait d'un archétype d'une enfance française.

I have also read Esther's notebooks, which tells the life of a 10 years old parisian girl who wish she had an Iphone, she was a beautiful (that means blond and flexible) singer so she would also be rich and famous, and who thinks that her brother and every boy is dumb (except her father). A chlidhood so well told that we could think that the author is himself 10 years old. A very entertaining and refreshing book, drawing the portrait of a french childhood's archetype.






Pour la deuxième BD que je souhaite vous présenter, on reste dans le Moyen-Orient des années 80 mais cette fois-ci on voyage jusqu'en Iran. Je parle bien sûr de Persepolis de Marjane Strapi.

The story of second comic that I want to share also take place in the 80's in the Middle-East, but now we travel to Iran. I'm obviously talking about Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.

C'est le même style de BD que celle de Riad Sattouf, dans le sens où c'est également autobiographique, qu'on y voit aussi un choc culturel Europe/Moyen-Orient, que c'est également le point de vue d'une enfant et que le trait est assez simple. Néanmoins, le ton est très différent car Marjane a un caractère bien différent de Riad : c'est une fille intelligente qui lit et se cultive beaucoup, avec un fort tempérament qui la pousse à s'engager dès son plus jeune âge.

There are a lot of similarities with Riad Sattouf's comic because it's also autobiographic, it also shows cultural differences between Europe and the Middle-East, it's also a child point of view and the line is also simple without colors. However, the tone is very different because Marjane has a very different personnality from Riad's : she's a smart girl who reads a lot, and she has strong political and religious ideas since she was very young.


Persepolis raconte donc l'histoire de Marjane qui, à 10 ans, vit la révolution qui renverse le chah puis instaure un régime islamique. Les règles religieuses deviennent lois et la liberté se retrouve réduite en miettes. Nombreux sont les prisonniers politiques, les exécutés, les exilés. Puis c'est la guerre, contre l'Irak, les bombardements, la folie meurtrière, l'embrigadement de jeunes... Marjane, seule, fuit la guerre vers l'Autriche où, seule, elle vivra 4 ans et plongera dans la drogue avant de revenir en Iran. Là, elle commence des études d'arts, elle se marie, mais malgré la fin de la guerre, elle ne peut toujours pas être une femme libre.

Persepolis tells the story of Marjane, a 10-year-old girl who live during the revolution against the chah followed by the establishment of an islamic government. The religious rules turn into laws and freedom is dying. There's a lot of political prisoners, victims of the capital sentence and people are leaving the country. Then begin the war against Irak, bombings, death. Children become soldiers... Marjane, alone, fly away from the war to Austria where she'll live during 4 years and will take drugs. Finally she commes back to Iran. There she begin art studies, she gets married, but despite the end of the war, she still can't be a free woman.


Cette bande-dessinée est culte et ce n'est pas pour rien. Elle est pleine de sensibilité, de tristesse, de révolte. Les faits ne sont pas décrits objectivement, mais vécus par Marjane et ses opinions qu'elle défend coûte que coûte. Ça parle aussi du sentiment de solitude et de ne pas se sentir à sa place : en Autriche, elle est la prude, l'étrangère, incomprise, sans attache ni repère. Quand elle revient en Iran, elle est l'occident détesté, une pute qui a donné son corps à plusieurs hommes hors mariages, toujours aussi incomprise. Et la morale de la BD est : la solution réside dans l'éducation.

This comic is very famous and it deserves it. It's emotive, sad, full of rebellion. The facts are not objectively described but showed with the eyes of Marjane who never renounce to her opinions. It also talks about loneliness and the feeling of belonging to nowhere, nothing. When she's in Austria, she's prude, she's a stranger, she's misunderstood, she's lost. When she comes back to Iran, she's the hated West, she's a whore because she had sex with several men without being married, and she's still misunderstood. And the lesson of the comic is : the solution is education.


Je recommande également cette BD à tous, bien qu'elle ait un ton plus adulte, plus sombre, plus sensible que la précédente. Et si le coeur vous en dit vous pouvez aussi regarder son adaptation en film d'animation (que je n'ai pas encore vue, mais ça ne saurait tarder).

I also recommend this comic to everybody, although she has a more adult, dark and emotive tone. And if you want you can also watch the movie adapted from the book !

Je tenais à présenter ces deux bande-dessinées en même temps, car on peut aisément effectuer le parallèle : les deux auteurs ont presque le même âge et il se trouve qu'ils ont aussi le même âge que mes parents. Il est donc assez amusant de comparer ces parcours très différent, selon où et de qui on est nés... De plus, il est assez facile et amusant de faire des liens : par exemple le père de Riad, sunnite, éprouve plutôt de l'antipathie pour l'Iran et les chiites, alors qu'en Iran c'est le contraire, les arabes et l'occident représentent l'ennemi.

I wanted to introduce these two comics together because it's easy to compare : the two authors and my parents have more or less the same age, so it's interesting to compare these very different lives, which change a lot according to where we live... Futhermore it's easy and interesting to make links : for example, Riad's father, who is sunnite, don't like chiites and Iran, whereas in Iran it's the contrary, the arabs and the West represents the ennemy.
